like dispatch, route planning, training, and driving. But we are NOT mechanics. We have worked
with drivers that could drop a tranny, or replace an injector, but for most drivers like us those
mechanical tasks are well above their capabilities. So you go out to your truck one Monday
morning ready to hit the road for a week, and when you check your oil, you notice the serpentine
belt has started to separate. Do you fix this yourself, or head to the mechanic? If you answer,
yeah, I can fix this myself… we applaud you. For the rest of us… time to call the Fast Team!
One of the biggest frustrations when dealing with a maintenance issue is the waiting time it takes to
get into the shop. We know a driver that waited a week to get his dealer shop to get to a simple
brake job. Over the years we have learned to develop a team of specialized maintenance guys to
address specific problems, we call them the Fast Team. Someday, maybe we’ll be big enough to
have our own shop, but for now the Fast Team relationships get it done.
Here’s a list, and we strongly suggest you develop a Fast Team of your own:
Tires- Earl’s Tires, New Castle, DE. With 12 tires on the road per truck at all times there is
almost always something to get done with tires. Earl’s has a yard next to his shop where we can
pull in for quick tire service. His guys jump on your truck like a NASCAR pit stop and without
even unhooking the trailer they can change any tire on the combination. Prices are good, and Earl
even has a few quality used tires around that we have worked well on our trailers. There are not
too many shops where you can pull with a 60 foot long combination, and be rolling with a couple
new tires in less than an hour.
Trailer Work- Ayers Repairs, New Castle DE- These guys work on big trucks and trailers in
New Castle, DE for years. They handle our trailer brakes, bearings, axle and suspension work,
and troublesome electrical problems. We can usually get in and out in a day, but there have been
times when they jump on lighting problems right away to get us on the road. We can re-wire a
pig tail when it’s corroded, but when there’s something not working down the trailer, it goes to
Engine Truck Work- Off The Grid, Wilmington, DE. Kevin at “Off The Grid” has a mobile
repair capability that has been incredibly efficient. He’s an expert on the Ford 7.3 liter turbo
diesel, and he gets all our engine and truck work. He brings his truck to our yard and fixes stuff
on the spot. Larger jobs like a clutch replacement go into his shop, at a secret Wilmington, DE
location… he’s off the grid.
So when the serpentine belt looks frayed on Monday morning… what’s your game plan? We
called Fast Team member Kevin at “Off The Grid” and for $125 we were back on the road in 90
minutes. Three years ago we would have been waiting all day at some shop and then paid twice
the price. We would urge you work hard at developing your own Fast Team, build those
relationships, and have a game plan for quick turn work to get back on the road.
