As a company Matchpoint Auto Transport does major holiday “shut-downs” including the upcoming Fourth of July weekend. All our drivers will be off the road from Wednesday evening July 2nd until Tuesday morning July 8th. This is a proven strategy that gives structured time off for our drivers to spend time with their families, and to create a window of time for routine maintenance. It’s also a clear safety initiative to keep our drivers out of the holiday traffic crush.
More than motor oil and air filters get refreshed during these shut-downs. Our drivers get an important rest period, a time to reflect on their business, and to gain a fresh perspective on their love-affair with the unique business of light commercial hotshot trucking.
There are many days when dealing with the challenges of the auto hauling business can overwhelm the reasons we drive. There are wrong addresses, missing cars, DOT stops, bad phone numbers, traffic, DOT stops, dead batteries, wrong turns, construction zones, and DOT stops. Yeah there are DOT stops!
Then there is this… a Mid June 5:45 AM sunrise at the Central Pennsylvania border with New York State. The temperature is 52, just right to let the mountain air pour through an open window as your truck cuts through the foggy early morning mist. It’s US 15 near Tioga, PA, no traffic, no radio, and nothing but the air, the scenery and a man in a truck.
This is why we drive. After a short break the road calls us back like a sailor to the sea, and because we realize the worst day on the road is better than the best day in a cubicle, working for a pinhead in the corner office.
